Allerton Towers
Liverpool
A Grade II listed stable house
We were approached by the current tenants of Allerton Towers – Merseyside Youth Challenge Trust (MYCT), to develop proposals to inject new life into a severely dilapidated site located within a parkland setting, adjacent to Woolton Golf Club.
Allerton Towers is a beautiful 35-acre park situated on the outskirts of Liverpool. The park was officially opened to the public in 1924. Within the grounds are several listed structures, the most notable of which being a Grade II listed stable house.
The stable house has been subjected to several fires over recent decades, leading to the structure being placed on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.
The property is currently leased by MYCT, a charity that aims to promote outdoor activities, health and wellbeing to under-achieving, less abled children. The quality of space is dilapidated, providing a currently sub-standard environment for the purposes of the charity.
There is a vast amount of unused space that could otherwise be brought back to life with a complete redesign to accommodate the needs of MYCT through a change of use.
A complete restoration of the entire structure
The proposals include the complete restoration of the entire structure and its surrounding grounds to provide a multi-functional activity centre that can be used for leisure, recreational, public speaking and organised social gatherings, commercial and office space, outdoor / indoor skills training workshops and events.
The two wings that have fallen and deteriorated through vandalism will be rebuilt in-line with the original layout and construction. The surrounding grounds will be reinstated with the original Edwardian pond water feature and cobbled paving that is currently buried under the overgrowth surrounding the stables.
Allerton Towers is currently at pre-application stage, whilst securing National Lottery and Heritage funding grants.
